Abstract
This article examines the significance of a social cultural approach in contextual Christian Religious Education (CRE) as a pedagogical framework for fostering religious tolerance within plural societies. Grounded in philosophical and pedagogical perspectives, this study argues that faith formation, ethical awareness, and tolerance are not merely products of doctrinal transmission, but are shaped through social interaction, cultural practices, symbols, language, and lived experiences. By employing a qualitative literature-based method, this study critically analyzes theoretical works on contextual education, critical pedagogy, and social cultural learning to identify gaps in normative approaches to CRE. The findings demonstrate that a social cultural approach enables CRE to function as a shared praxis in which faith is formed through reflective engagement with concrete social and cultural realities. By integrating local culture, dialogical learning, and experiential practices, CRE becomes an incarnational educational space that nurtures ethical and relational openness toward others. Consequently, religious tolerance is understood not as passive acceptance of difference, but as an active ethical responsibility rooted in lived encounters and mutual recognition. This study concludes that the social cultural approach provides a vital foundation for transformative, dialogical, and contextually relevant CRE in Indonesia’s pluralistic context.
