Economic Theology, Sugar Palm, Church Empowerment, Community WelfareAbstract
This article examines the utilization of the sugar palm (Arenga pinnata), locally known as pohon mayang, from the perspective of economic theology within the context of Jemaat GPM Akoon, Maluku. The study aims to explore the economic and social benefits of the sugar palm for congregational welfare and to formulate a theological reflection on its utilization as part of Christian stewardship. Using a qualitative research method, data were collected through interviews, observation, and literature review. The findings indicate that the sugar palm holds significant economic potential. However, its utilization has predominantly focused on the production of sopi, which carries social and ethical risks. From an economic-theological perspective, the church is called to encourage responsible, just, and sustainable management of natural resources. This study concludes that diversifying the utilization of the sugar palm and strengthening the role of the church as a facilitator of community empowerment can enhance congregational welfare while remaining faithful to Christian ethical values.
