Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of the church as an advocacy agent in the agrarian conflict in Tananahu Village involving the indigenous community and PTP Nusantara XIV Awaya Plantation. The research employs a qualitative approach with a descriptive-analytical method. Data are collected through in-depth interviews, field observations, and document analysis, also interpreted to identify patterns and meanings of church involvement in the context of agrarian conflict. The findings reveal that the church’s involvement is not formal-structural or legal in nature, but primarily emphasizes moral, spiritual, and social accompaniment of the community. The church functions as a space for strengthening faith, maintaining social cohesion, and acting as a partner of the local government in preventing conflict escalation and violence. This form of engagement reflects an initial praxis of Advocacy Theology, in that the church accompanies the community in pursuing land rights through peaceful and dialogical approaches. However, the study also indicates that the church’s advocacy role remains largely confined to the pastoral sphere and has not fully addressed the structural dimensions of agrarian conflict characterized by unequal power relations between indigenous communities and corporations. Therefore, this study underscores the need for a more transformative and contextual model of church advocacy that remains rooted in the principles of peace and reconciliation. These findings contribute both theoretically to the development of theology of advocacy in Indonesia and practically to church engagement in responding to agrarian conflicts.
